The federal airfield began life as a facility for the U.S. Navy and is currently under the authority of the NASA Ames Research Center. The main architectural features are three mighty hangars. In particular, Hangar One, which is one of the largest buildings of its kind in the world and is considered one of America’s Most Endangered Places. It is often claimed that the hangar is so large that it creates its own internal weather patterns, including fog. The field started in 1931 as the home for the USS Macon airship. After being decommissioned in 1994, Moffett Field has been open on a limited basis to the general public for tours. |
