The Ames Center became part of NASA in 1958 and since then has been a leader in vital high-tech research. Although Ames no longer offer tours of the grounds, guests can visit the new NASA Ames Exploration Center located at the main gate. The center features the West Coast’s largest immersive theater projecting images and special effects twice the resolution of high-definition video on a 36-foot screen. Viewers can interact with videos and experience a re-creation of flying over the terrain of Mars. Current exhibits include a moon rock retrieved by Apollo 15 in 1971, along with other samples of extraterrestrial finds. The Ames Exploration Center also included a gift shop of NASA Space memorabilia. |
